Thien Duc was a member of the Nyueng Bao De Duang race who would become the bodyguard of Black Company wizard Goblin. During She Is the Darkness, Thien Duc knew only a handful of words in the Taglian language and was reticent by nature, and as such Goblin was lonely in his presence.

Although he was not mentioned explicitly in Dreams of Steel or Bleak Seasons, Thien Duc did survive the harrowing Siege of Dejagore. During this event, the Nyueng Bao pilgrimage of 1,800 individuals was reduced to one third of its original population during a mass murder at the hands of Taglian soldiers loyal to Mogaba. Like many other Nyueng Bao men, he became a bodyguard for a Black Company soldier (in his case, Goblin) out of a profound sense of loyalty and gratitude. This was because Murgen and the Company were instrumental in saving the remaining 600 members of their population. Like all Nyueng Bao bodyguards, Thien Duc never swore the oath, and did not become an official Company brother.

Thien Duc accompanied Goblin on his Shaded Road commando expedition in She Is the Darkness. They conducted a distant campaign ordered by Croaker to mobilize reliable fighters south of the Dandha Presh. Although they spread considerable fear throughout Mogaba's ranks and the villages which were loyal to the Protectorate, the primary goal of Shaded Road was to provide insurance for the Company if the Prahbrindrah Drah betrayed Croaker in his role as Liberator. In addition to Goblin, there was at least one other sworn Company brother in the Shaded Road expedition (the dimwitted Bubba-do), but, the bulk of the group consisted of 100 young male Taglians, all under the age 25, who were interested in joining Company. (Goblin had sold them the idea that the operation was an entrance exam.) Of all these men, Thien Duc showed the least fear of all when the fearsome forvalaka, Lisa Daele Bowalk, rendezvoused with Goblin. When everyone else hustled away as the monster approached, Thien Duc remained close in his role as bodyguard. He is not mentioned again in the Annals, but, he almost certainly remained alongside Goblin during the Kiaulune wars and would not have become one of the Captured.
