Syndic was the title of the ruler of Beryl, the oldest of the Jewel Cities.

The Black CompanyEdit

The Syndic who hired the Black Company as his personal guard was the leader of the organization known as the Reds. He was a small man with a huge hooked nose. He had many political enemies among the opposition group known as the Blues, and needed armed protection from them. At some point the conflict between the noble factions and their mercenaries escalated to a full scale civil war in the city. Soon the Company realized that the city was right to rebel, as their ruler was an unworthy man, but they had a contract to protect him nevertheless. Searching for a way to break out of the contract, they had a secret meeting with a mysterious legate (Soulcatcher) from the northern empire, who offered to organize a little accident for the Syndic, in order to free the Company from his employment.

During the riots the Syndic was hiding in the Paper Tower under the protection of the Company. In the last night of the riots a shape-shifting beast attacked the palace, apparently on the legate's orders. Surprisingly, the Syndic managed to hide from the monster, but was surreptitiously killed, presumably by Match, under the orders of the Captain of the Company. After this, Soulcatcher installed a puppet Syndic as replacement, a distant relative of his predecessor who was also a member of the Reds. Even if he was just a figurehead, this man would be the last leader of Beryl to be called "Syndic", as his replacements were identified simply as imperial governors.
