Speaker was the title of the single diplomat among the Nyueng Bao De Duang pilgrimage who communicated with the cultures outside their race during the events recounted in Bleak Seasons. It was a deeply-respected position among the Nyueng Bao and carried powers like that of a head of state. The rest of the members of their race were notoriously taciturn and quite content to shelter themselves from the rest of the world, most even going so far as to hide that they spoke the Taglian language. Besides the Speaker, the only other exception to this cultural tendency was Banh Do Trang, an extensively well-traveled Nyueng Bao trader who once loved a Gunni woman.

Ky Dam[]

When a massive group of about 1800 Nyueng Bao people made their pilgrimage concurrent with the Books of the South, their Speaker was Ky Dam. His wife, Hong Tray, was the last true priestess of the Nyueng Bao. The whole pilgrimage was trapped in Dejagore by Shadowspinner during the infamous Siege of Dejagore. Ky Dam shared much intelligence with Murgen of the Black Company's Old Crew and the two groups established an alliance. Though the Speaker and his wife were among the approximately 1200 Nyueng Bao wiped out during the siege, the alliance he created with the Black Company would save the remaining 600 members of his race. His collaborations would help cement the bond between the Nyueng Bao and the Old Crew that would last for years afterward.

Uncle Doj[]

After Speaker Ky Dam's death, Murgen requested that someone speak for the Nyueng Bao at a meeting he planned with the Taglian general Lanore Bonharj. Uncle Doj represented them, and the three leaders created a successful alliance to evacuate from Dejagore under the noses of Mogaba, his Nar enforcers, and his Taglian First Legion loyalists.

Tam Dak and afterward[]

Not long after that meeting, Uncle Doj was replaced by Tam Dak, another frail elderly man as Ky Dam had been. Murgen continued collaborating with the new Speaker during their evacuation from Dejagore in Bleak Seasons. Tam Dak was not mentioned again afterward in the Annals. He may have led the bulk of the surviving pilgrims back to the Nyueng Bao's home swamp, whereas Uncle Doj remained behind with the Black Company with his Path of the Sword warriors (now bodyguards for the Old Crew) and a small group of other Nyueng Bao civilians.

During the Battle of Charandaprash in She Is the Darkness, Sindhu informed Narayan Singh that Uncle Doj was the Speaker of the Nyueng Bao. If this statement was accurate, Doj would have been the Speaker only for the swordsmen of the Path of the Sword and a small body of other Nyueng Bao civilians. No other Speakers are mentioned in the Annals after that, but Ky Sahra – the granddaughter of Ky Dam and Hong Tray – takes on a very similar leadership role for the Nyueng Bao attached to the Black Company for many years afterward.
