Smoke Green Ronin Campaign p215

Soulcatcher's Palace demon was the frightening entity which savagely mauled the Taglian court wizard Smoke in Dreams of Steel. The demon's incomplete assassination attempt ultimately left Smoke in a years-long coma, with his spirit un-anchored from his body, movable through both time and space. This would become an invaluable resource of the Black Company in the subsequent years of the Shadowmaster wars.

The demon was able to move through openings the size of a pinhole in the form of dense smoke. It had a "hideous and fanged" face that was "filled with grim purpose" and left behind an "odor like cinnamon and mustard and wine all mixed".

Dreams of Steel[]

After Smoke's enslavement by Longshadow was revealed, Smoke found himself surrounded by enemies in the Palace of Taglios. He holed up in a secure room but noticed a pinhole in his sorcery protection. After sealing that, he attempted to contact Longshadow. But, Soulcatcher's demon tore through the seal, and penetrated the pinhole to maul the frightened wizard. Simultaneously, the Royal Guards, escorting the Prahbrindrah Drah and the Radisha Drah personally, battered down Smoke's door. The demon had been ripping at Smoke in a corner, but was stunned to see the royals in the doorway:

The monster looked up, startled. It stared. Apparently this situation was beyond its instructions. It hung there, motionless.

The Prahbrindrah threw a sharp stake of wood at it, so the demon shrank away "swiftly and dramatically", leaving behind its characteristic odor.

Soulcatcher seemed satisfied that Smoke was dead, and the demon does not appear again in the Annals. But the Black Company kept Smoke alive in great secrecy to get answers about his treachery and about Longshadow, and soon discovered his un-anchored spirit. One-Eye, Croaker, and later, more prominently Murgen would use Smoke's spirit to conduct priceless surveillance in the present and the past. Soulcatcher herself – during her time disguised as Sleepy – would finish the job of her Palace demon by finally killing Smoke near Kiaulune in She Is the Darkness.
