The snake imp was a powerful supernatural entity associated with Goblin and which appeared in Shadow Games. Resembling a black snake made of smoke billowing forth from a pouch, the snake imp was a dangerous enemy unintentionally planted among the Black Company.

Shadow Games[]

Among the shadowweavers[]

The snake imp was almost certainly conjured from its otherworldly home by Longshadow, an experienced conjurer who was "dreaded in the demon worlds". He then gave it to a group of six of his shadowweavers (low-magnitude hedge-wizards who managed small shadows) presumably for protection. These six men turned out to be the first shadowweavers encountered in the Annals. After the six were killed in a rain of explosive sorcery (sent by Shapeshifter, or possibly Soulcatcher), Goblin retrieved the snake imp from the wreckage. Goblin, though he was a stronger wizard than any of the shadowweavers, incorrectly believed he could control the entity. He was blinded by his desire to use the imp to harass his rival One-Eye, who had been using another imp, Frogface, to torment him. Goblin became noticeably smug, thinking he finally had the upper hand on One-Eye. The snake imp was now effectively an enemy plant among the Black Company.

The fight with Frogface[]

At Willow Swan's bar in Taglios, Goblin and One-Eye got drunk, and their typically petty rivalry became uncharacteristically vicious. The two old wizards dueled drunkenly with dangerous sorcery; meanwhile, the snake imp rose out of Goblin's pouch and clashed with Frogface. The feud gutted Swan's bar with fire. Swan, Blade, Cordy Mather, and others were knocked unconscious when they tried to break up the fight. A "shower of light washed the street" when the two imps grappled. An eyewitness, Lady, recognized that the snake imp was a genuine match for Frogface. She immediately surmised that Goblin did not have the skill to control such a thing any more than One-Eye should have the skill to control Frogface. Croaker – the Black Company Captain and Liberator of Taglios – broke up the fight by knocking the two wizards on the head with his officer's baton and chastising them. When the snake imp recognized a high value enemy target and suddenly lunged to kill Croaker, it was barely deflected in time by Frogface. One-Eye helped Goblin stuff it back into the pouch, seal it in a wine jar, and bury it in an undisclosed location.
