Shin was a mysterious young boy in the service of the sorceress called Mischievous Rain during Port of Shadows. Croaker estimated Shin was around six years of age, the same as his sister, Baku, but both siblings repeatedly demonstrated an intellect beyond their years as well as sorcery, such as the ability to travel through shadows. They were accompanied by a cat-like creature named Ankou. Croaker would come to believe that they were some kind of demon whom Mischievous Rain had contracted or bound, but Mischievous Rain insisted that Shin and Baku were her and Croaker's children. At least two years afterward, Shin reappeared during the events of "Cranky Bitch" using the monikers Luckless and Traveler.

Port of Shadows[]

While the Black Company was stationed in Aloe, Shin befriended a local named Gurdlief Speak. Shin also crafted and distributed numerous so-called "shadow pots", earthenware jugs that contained concentrated shadows. As long as a Company patrol took care to plant one of these shadow pots on the perimeter of their camp, Shin could instantly travel to it and destroy any hostiles, such as Rebels and Resurrectionists. This tactic could not be countered at first and contributed much to the demoralization of the regional Rebel force, but the Resurrectionists eventually created a spell that could shatter any crockery in a nearby radius. For unknown reasons, although Baku demonstrated that containers made of other materials could be substituted for pots, Shin continued making the pots.

The Black Company and apparently the Lady lost their memories of their actions during Port of Shadows. This included their interactions with Shin and Baku.

"Cranky Bitch"[]

Unrecognized, the twins reappeared at least two years later during the events of "Cranky Bitch". They were spotted by Candy, the recently-elected Black Company Lieutenant, in an alley of Chimney. Even though the twins were infested with fleas and lice, Candy invited the twins aboard Cranky Bitch. The Black Company members who interacted with them during Port of Shadows had lost their memories of that time, so they were mostly unrecognized except for the vaguest sense of familiarity. The twins – now using the names Luckless and Lacksluck, or, Traveler and "Traveler's sister" – became excellent cooks and replaced the prior cook called Snoggle. However, they would seem to disappear into shadows, and "Luckless" was overly prone to sustaining injuries during the ship's combat maneuvers.

Later, Luckless was spotted in so far up the mainmast, that he was at the edge of Darling’s null, ostensibly revealing their position to enemies. Hagop shot Luckless with a sniper's crossbow, and the injured boy was retrieved by Master Sylus's topmen. He was overheard mumbling in TelleKurre by Croaker, but, his words were not understood. Luckless soon disappeared entirely, just like his sister. Croaker and Elmo briefly encounter Lacksluck and Luckless one last time, in the streets of Chimney, before the strange pair disappears into thin air upon entering a nearby shadow.
