Ranashya is one of the notable Lords of Darkness in Gunni mythology. Some legends identify him as the father of Kina in prehistoric times, albeit after inhabiting the body of one of the Lords of Light. These myths and a few alternative Gunni origin stories for Kina are recorded by Murgen in his Annals for She Is the Darkness. Ranashya is specified by name to be the "devil" who took over the physical form of Fretinyahl and tricked the goddess Mata into the sexual union which produced the notorious offspring Kina.

In Dreams of Steel – a few years prior to Murgen's mention of Ranashya – the Radisha Drah of Taglios shared a virtually identical myth with her foreign advisors Willow Swan, Blade, and Cordy Mather. Although she did not specify Ranashya ("a prince of Shadow") or Fretinyahl ("the most handsome of the Lords of Light") by name, the key details are the same except that Kina's mother is identified here as Mahi instead of Mata. The Radisha also specified that Ranashya only inhabited Fretinyahl's body for one year.

The unnatural goddess Kina would infamously go on to wage terrible war against both the Lords of Light and of Darkness. First she severely weakened the Lords of Light, and next devoured an entire demon horde sent by the Lords of Darkness on the glittering plain. Finally, Fretinyahl (now apparently back in his own body) is said to have tricked Kina into her deathlike prison.

It is possible that Ranashya is also recognized in the polytheistic Shadar cults as well, since they share many deities with the Gunni, but this was not specified.
