Black Company Wiki

The Paper Tower was a fortified residence located within the walls of the Bastion of Beryl. It was a six-story spire where the ruler, the Syndic of the "Reds" ruling party, made his headquarters. It had the following levels, from bottom to top: kitchen level, stores level, 2 levels of servants' quarters, then family, then the Syndic's library and offices at the top.

Despite at least two years serving the Syndic, Croaker the Annalist mentioned that he had never been inside the Paper Tower until the fateful night of the Black Company's hellish encounter there.

The Black Company[]

During the events of Croaker's first chronicle, one of the fell omens observed by the people of Beryl was the eviction of the eagle which nested atop the Paper Tower by one of ten strange black vultures.

After a flash of brutal violence in the Groan (the slums), a forvalaka violently slaughtered dozens of people inside the Paper Tower, including the Syndic's Black Company bodyguards, as it tore its way up through the structure to find the Syndic. The leadership of the Black Company led a well-armed group to hunt this monster. The senior members of this group were the Captain, the Lieutenant, Croaker, the sergeants Elmo and Match, as well as the wizards One-Eye, Tom-Tom, Goblin, and Silent. This would be the last time all 4 wizards worked together, as during the combat with the monster, Tom-Tom was among those fatally mauled. The injured forvalaka fled to the topmost level and escaped by descending the outer face of the Paper Tower.

Croaker implied that Match assassinated the Syndic that same night after the man was found cowering inside his locked strongbox.

The Company evacuated their wounded, and the Bastion was soon occupied by soldiers serving the mysterious legate (Soulcatcher) from the Empire of the northern continent. The next Syndic, a Red puppet selected by the legate, was presumably installed within the Paper Tower, as was the Imperial governors who followed.
