One-Eye wearing his hat by Alexander Sebag.

One-Eye's hat was a threadbare and unwashed piece of headwear worn by the old, diminutive wizard One-Eye throughout his time in the Black Company. Many of the Annalists including Croaker, Murgen, and Sleepy recorded their immense dislike for it, often commenting on its foul appearance and condition. It was "floppy" and made of felt. Despite being tattered, it still had a brim to shield his eyes from the sun. He would sometimes give his hat a quarter turn while speaking.

Croaker mentioned the hat twice in "Shaggy Dog Bridge": "One-Eye gave his filthy black hat a quarter turn, ‘To confuse the enemy,’" and later "One-Eye bobbed his head. That stupid black hat flopped off." Later, in "Bone Eaters", Croaker wrote that One-Eye "gave the remnants of his disgusting old black hat a quarter turn" and "winked" when he saw the teenage girl Chasing Midnight and made a lewd comment about her.

In She Is the Darkness (chapter 2) Murgen wrote:

Anybody running into One-Eye would know who he was right away. He is the most recognizable member of the Company. His ugly old black hat gives him away even in the dark. It is so damned filthy it glows. I exaggerate only slightly.

In Water Sleeps (chapter 5) Sleepy wrote an even more strongly-worded complaint about the hat:

He must have been born old. And wearing the ugliest, filthiest black hat that ever existed. Maybe One-Eye goes on forever because of the curse of that hat. Maybe the hat uses him as its steed and depends on him for its survival. That crusty, stinking glob of felt rag will hit the nearest fire before One-Eye's corpse finishes bouncing. Everyone hates it.

In Soldiers Live, One-Eye revealed he had bound a tapestry of magic spells within it, including one that could disrupt the demonic possession of Goblin's body by the Khadidas. Croaker used glue to keep the hat attached to Goblin's head, relieving him of Kina's control for as long as it was worn. With the hideous hat on his head and One-Eye's spear fastened in his hands, Goblin was able to participate with Croaker on their final assault upon Kina, deep beneath the fortress with no name. The hat was destroyed in the ensuing conflagration.
