Niassi is a monstrous mythological demon in the Shadar religion. During Water Sleeps, the wizards of the underground Black Company used frightening illusions of Niassi to distract and antagonize Soulcatcher's Shadar police force known as the Greys in the streets of Taglios.

In myth[]

Niassi was a major Shadar demon who was believed to punish evil people during their lifetimes. Sleepy described the demon as follows:

Niassi was a chieftain of the inner circle of the most powerful demons. Shadar beliefs, being heretical Vehdna, include a posthumous, punitive Hell but also definitely include the possibility of a Gunni-like Hell on earth, in life, managed by demons in Niassi’s employ, laid on for the particularly wicked.

Sleepy mentioned that a similar demon under another form of the name exists in Gunni belief, but she did not record the name.

Water Sleeps[]

Niassi is first mentioned in the Annals when a frightening representation of the demon, carefully crafted by the elderly wizard Goblin, shocked some of the Greys by staring directly at them. The moving image made of smoke came from a "button" secretly placed behind a puppeteer's stage by Tobo, Goblin's apprentice. Although Niassi's appearance was not described, he must have immediately-recognizable attributes, as the Greys understood what it was instantly. The religious nature of the Niassi image differed from prior smoke illusions and sound effects employed by the Black Company. For the Greys, it was an "attack from an unanticipated and sensitive direction".

Later, Goblin used another smoke illusion of Niassi. While disguised as one of the veyedeen dervishes, he attempted to enter the slum called Chor Bagan. But, he was accosted by Greys on the street, so he disabled the Grey sergeant from a distance and used Niassi to distract them. This illusion "began to whisper secrets no Shadar wanted to hear".

More buttons containing frightening illusions of Niassi were left with those Black Company brothers who remained in Taglios when Sleepy and the rest departed for the Shadowgate.
