Black Company Wiki

The mist projector was an artifact, consisting of both mechanical and magical components, created by the wizards One-Eye and Goblin. It was their last great work due to their ailing powers by the eighth chronicle, Water Sleeps. During that time period, it was the Black Company's most valuable single resource since it allowed them to maintain a strong connection to Murgen's disembodied spirit. Prior to the device's invention, the Company depended upon Ky Sahra's private mental connection to commune with her husband Murgen.

Water Sleeps[]

The mist projector was designed to 'tether' a disembodied spirit to the projector's location, so the user could subsequently communicate with the incorporeal entity. The apparatus was necessary since One-Eye and Goblin did not specialize in necromancy; if they had, they would have been able achieve the same effect without the artifact. Specifically, it was constructed to summon Murgen's spirit during the Black Company's time undercover in Taglios, in order to spy and relay information about the Protectorate to them. Despite being one of the Captured, Murgen's astral projection ability used in conjunction with the artifact allowed him to do this, but could only do it for short periods, and had a tendency to loose track of time and sense of self. The projector is not described in detail but it required setting up in a static location and required large amounts of water to operate. After the Captured were freed it no longer served a function, although it likely fell into Tobo's possession along with most of One-Eye's and Goblin's equipment.
