Mermaids are the supernatural, shape-shifting women encountered by the Black Company in "Wet Dream Fish Story", a short story of the On The Long Run arc. They inhabit the freshwater rivers surrounding an ancient, man-made island found within the western wilderness, "the densest forest north of the Sea of Torments" (that is, in the northern continent) somewhere west of Rue. Though at least 14 different mermaids of varying ages were observed, only one – Dai-Li (pronounced Dye Lee) – would reveal her name. They lived in a centuries-long contention with Adelin, Honra, and Eisen Fisher, a trio of immortal mermaid-hunters whom they kept trapped on the island. While the Company mercenaries were forced to repair the two bridges connected to this island, the mysterious, nude, buxom women caused a sensation. But ultimately the mermaids proved to be neither ally nor enemy.

Wet Dream Fish Story[]

There were at least 14 different mermaids observed, some of varying ages. Initially, they only partially surfaced from the water, so their true nature was not understood for many days. Eventually it was revealed that the mermaids have “teeth like a cross between a lamprey and a sand shark” and their language sounds like “clicks, snorts and whistles”. At first they silently observed the Company, only to submerge shortly afterward, causing delays in the bridge repairs which the frustrated senior sergeant Candy had to interrupt. The Company wizard One-Eye privately revealed to Croaker that the mermaids have a special connection to a remote spot in the center of the island, where a small lake with its own tiny island is found. An artificial channel links this lake to the outside river.

Connection to the Fisher trio[]

Meanwhile, the Fisher trio explained to Tedd (the only person who could interpret their language) that whoever eats sufficient amounts of the mermaids' flesh becomes ageless, as the Fishers are. They also reveal they have been trapped there by the mermaids since the days of the Domination (roughly 415 years), and in fact they had been sent to this place with several other now-dead fishermen by the Dominator himself to collect the priceless mermaid flesh.

Dai-Li and Showboy[]

Eventually a mermaid named Dai-Li dragged Showboy and his dog Ralf beneath the water. When Showboy was released 3 days later, the disoriented young man pieced together hazy memories that the mermaids took him to a beautiful palace under the water, and that they explained their origin story: they were the descendants of a matriarch called the "River Queen" who now resides as a "water dragon" elsewhere. This tale is called into serious doubt when Croaker has the two elderly wizards One-Eye and Goblin examine his memories with sorcery: they learn that the "Palace of the River Queen" was actually just a sorcery illusion; he had merely been relocated to a muddy den. Also, upon Showboy’s release, it is learned that the mermaids have an inherent connection to sorcery: when Darling defiantly approached them, the mermaids moved away from her anti-sorcery null.

Attacking the Fishers[]

Later, as the Black Company crossed the second bridge, Adelin, Honra, and Eisen Fisher crossed with them, lugging packs that presumably contained hundreds of pounds of mermaid jerky they had collected throughout the centuries. Three mermaids in turn leapt from the water onto the bridge, revealing eight feet of fish tail below the waist. Shape-shifting into human form in midair, each river woman seized one of the Fishers in their clawed hands, and leapt back into the water with their horrified prey. Men from the Company severely wounded the third mermaid, and the violence ended there. The mermaids remained in their waters as the Company trudged eastward.
