Mercy wasn't one of my favorite people. He never stopped being the boy who pulled wings off flies.

Croaker, The Black Company

Mercy was a prominent sergeant in the Black Company. He was active prior to the events of the first book, and during the events in Beryl. He was "a smallish, cocky fellow, fond of the dramatic gesture", a man with a stentorian voice who "could get a big roar out of his small body", as characterized by Croaker the Annalist.

The Black Company

Croaker described him as particularly vicious and cutthroat, even among Company brothers. He led the raid on the Mole Tavern, where he announced that Verus was charged with murder. When the Blues and their enraged sympathizers rose up in arms, Mercy killed a number of them until he sustained a minor dagger wound. He then shouted for Silent the wizard to intervene, and Silent unleashed a mass of bald-faced hornets which only attacked the Company's enemies. Mercy and his men executed the wounded (to save "the Syndic the cost of a trial and a hangman") and herded the mob of new captives to the Bastion.

On their march back with the prisoners, Mercy, Silent, Croaker, and the others with them were stunned by a mysterious rider on the back of an enormous black stallion, who rode at the head of a procession of 100 armed, foreign veterans. This would turn out to be Soulcatcher, the legate from the Lady's Empire.

When three mutinous groups of Urban Cohorts rebelled against the Syndic, they clashed with Mercy and his platoon who were manning a strong-point at the Rubbish Gate. Mercy was able to successfully repel them, but was fatally wounded during the fight along with most of his men.
