Laissa was one of the four Senjak sisters, either Ardath or Sylith. According to disputed records, Laissa was the youngest of the sisters and the favorite of the Dominator. She was accidentally killed and her body was retrieved by the necromancer Papa, who used her as a test subject in his experiments to revive the dead. Although Papa succeeded at restoring the girl, whom he named Laissa after his lost love, to life, he had unknowingly taken too long to implement his spells, resulting in the girl losing her original personality, memories, and all but the most basic knowledge, such as locomotion and language. The ritual was also imperfect, and Laissa's life would quickly wane unless Papa regularly reapplied it to it.

While searching for the lost Senjak in order to prevent a possible balance of power crisis within the Domination, Laissa's sister "Credence" (almost certainly misnamed in the records and most likely the Lady) investigated Papa's stronghold, but was unprepared for the many subtle defensive spells the necromancer had woven and was overwhelmed. Papa took both Laissa and "Credence", whom he insisted on calling "Kitten" or "Koneko", far to the east, where they established a new home in the Ghost Country. Kitten shared what knowledge she had of the Blessing, the Dominator's ritual that bestowed semi-eternal life, with Papa in order to stabilize Laissa's condition, but Papa took the opportunity to extract Kitten's ova and implant them in Laissa. He later conceived a child, Precious Pearl, with Laissa. Many years later, long after Kitten had escaped back to the Domination and Papa had succumbed to old age, Precious Pearl continued to care for Laissa and continue his father's research, eventually perfecting the process of creating copies of Laissa and Kitten that would eventually be discovered by the Resurrectionists and used in a plot to create a Port of Shadows, the woman who would give birth to the reincarnation of the Dominator.

Laissa was eventually reunited with Kitten, who had assumed the identity of Mischievous Rain, when the Lady's Empire subjugated the Ghost Country. Croaker was present at the reunion and was bewildered when Mischievous Rain introduced him to Laissa as her husband, and spoke his birth name.
