Black Company Wiki

Hargadon was one of the most influential figures in the city of Juniper during Shadows Linger. As the senior Custodian, he was in charge of the most sacred place in the whole city – the Catacombs – where all the dead had been interred for centuries. He was no stranger to the company of the city's ruler, Duke Zimerlan.

The Black Company's Annalist, Croaker, made no attempt in his writings to hide his disdain for Hargadon.

Shadows Linger[]

Hargadon and Duke Zimerlan were deeply troubled by the shunned black castle that was inexplicably growing ever-larger on the northern ridge of the Wolander Mountains in recent years. So they sent a formal request to the Lady – an unparalleled sorceress and the ruler of her own empire – to come and advise.

Alongside Inquisitor Bullock, Hargadon and Duke Zimerlan met with the Lady's representatives, the new Taken Whisper and Feather, and an advance team of Black Company veterans including Croaker. Atop the frigid northern wall of the palace Duretile, Zimerlan explained what little they knew about the black castle's bizarre history. Hargadon then complained about low numbers of corpses being collected by his Custodian street patrols from the downtrodden Buskin, and mentioned the rumor that the mysterious inhabitants of the castle were purchasing the bodies. Croaker disliked Hargadon immediately.

Later, after Feather had been killed by the black castle creatures, Hargadon and Zimerlan met with the Lady personally at Duretile. He argued but it was apparent that he and the other important men of Juniper were powerless now that the Lady was asserting her control. Very shortly after the Battle of Juniper, the Lady's forces looted the Catacombs. This unspeakable sacrilege caused Hargadon to personally lead a massive, violent uprising against Juniper's occupiers. Hargadon's mobs killed many Imperial regulars and Black Company men, and cornered the rest in Duretile. The Lady responded by laying waste to much of the city with her sorcery, and it is unspecified (but unlikely) if Hargadon survived.
