Not to be confused with the unrelated golden pickax talisman

The Golden Hammer is a violent magic spell used by Lady twice in Dreams of Steel. Like many spells, it is summoned with a combination of specific words of power and finger motions. It glows when thrown and painfully brands its shape on the intended victim.

Dreams of Steel[]

In her Annals, Lady downplayed the Golden Hammer as "a child's spell, an exercise, not a weapon at all, just as a butcher knife isn't" and "gaudy but with no real substance, deadly only to the ignorant and unprepared". However, she was especially proud of it, as it was the first noteworthy spell she summoned after being stripped of sorcery in the Rite of Naming that had occurred during The White Rose. Later events would reveal that Lady's source for her newfound sorcery was not her own innate power, which was truly lost, but loaned from Kina.

Lady used the spell in the aftermath of the Battle of Dejagore to strike down one of the two Shadowlanders who had found her passed out on the battlefield. This was witnessed by a pair of Stranglers: Narayan Singh and Ram. She later used it to strike the high Gunni priest Chandra Chan Tal in the shoulder during a contentious meeting with all three Taglian priesthoods. Tal was described by Smoke as "one of the most important men in Taglios" and Lady humiliated him with the spell, which spun him around, knocked him down, and caused him to scream "for more than a minute" before passing out. Tal survived, as intended, but attempted to murder Lady later and was slain for his trouble by Narayan's Stranglers. Lady quickly moved on to much more advanced spells than the Golden Hammer as she parasitized Kina for increasing amounts of power.
