Gilbert was an old, one-eyed, corrupt moneylender operating in the Buskin, the poorest section of the city of Juniper, during Shadows Linger. He schemed to rip off Marron Shed, owner of the Iron Lily bar and inn, but would pay dearly for his plot.

Shadows Linger[]

Marron Shed took a loan from Gilbert to pay off some debt he owed to Krage, a prominent local gang leader. When Krage heard Shed took Gilbert's loan, he accelerated his own plot to acquire the Lily and transform it into a brothel. The homeless man Asa informed Shed of this danger. Later, Gilbert turned down Shed's next request for a new loan.

Gilbert later loaned a significant sum to Wally, Shed's thieving cousin who gambled away a fortune he had stolen from the Lily. When Wally confessed all this to his cousin, Shed flew into a rage and gave him a beating that was unintentionally fatal. Shortly after, a mysterious man appeared, gave an accurate account of Wally's murder, and demanded regular hush money. Shed discovered the extortionist was sent by Gilbert, and with some hired help, murdered the extortionist.

With his extortion plot thwarted, Gilbert next made a much more successful play against Shed. He sent a beautiful young prostitute named Sue to seduce him. She was so successful that within two weeks of meeting her, Shed needed to take another loan from Gilbert to afford her expensive tastes. Within a month, he poured so much money into his foolhardy relationship with Sue that Sal (Wally's widow) warned him to be careful, and Lisa Daele Bowalk (his helper at the Lily) temporarily hid the rest of his cash to protect him from himself. Shed was in denial, but investigated Sue and soon discovered that she was indeed not only Gilbert's partner in crime but also his lover. Heartbroken, Shed resolved to get vengeance because Sue's scheme would have resulted in the foreclosure of the Lily. Gilbert feigned hesitation and asked for a lien on the Lily when Shed asked him for one final loan. That night, Shed subdued Sue and sold her to the disturbing and mysterious castle creatures of the black castle.

Gilbert was weighing coins in his office when he next encountered Shed, who now was accompanied by tough-looking "sailors" he hired from the Lily (actually Goblin and two others from the Black Company). He paid off most of his debt to Gilbert with cash and Sue's own expensive jewelry. Staring at a ring he presumably gave her, the old moneylender realized Sue's fate and was shocked.

Gilbert hired bodyguards and lived in fear of Shed afterward. But he would not live long. Lisa Bowalk blackmailed Shed into helping her assassinate Gilbert. While she seduced the moneylender, Shed sneaked in and garroted him. They delivered Gilbert's corpse to the black castle, but were apprehended by the Black Company moments later.
