Fretinyahl is one of the notable Lords of Light in Gunni mythology and possibly considered "the most handsome" of them all. He is mentioned in a well-known Gunni origin myth of the terrible goddess Kina, recorded by Murgen in his Annals for She Is the Darkness. He is also associated with the creation of the golem Shivetya. In the legend, Fretinyahl's appearance is stolen by the "devil" Ranashya, one of the Lords of Darkness, who uses the disguise to trick the goddess Mata into the sexual union which produced the notorious offspring.

In Dreams of Steel – a few years prior to Murgen's mention of Ranashya – the Radisha Drah of Taglios shared a virtually identical myth with her foreign advisors Willow Swan, Blade, and Cordy Mather. Although she did not specify Ranashya ("a prince of Shadow") or Fretinyahl ("the most handsome of the Lords of Light") by name, the key details are the same except that Kina's mother is identified here as Mahi instead of Mata.

The unnatural goddess Kina would infamously go on to wage terrible war against both the Lords of Light and of Darkness. First she severely weakened the Lords of Light. When the Lords of Darkness detected the opportunity, they sent entire demon horde to kill the vulnerable Lords of Light. Fretinyahl begged Kina to intervene, and she devoured the demons in a violent battle on the glittering plain. Finally, her father is said to have tricked Kina into her deathlike prison.

Next, according to Thai Dei:

the other Lords of Light directed Fretinyahl to make a demon out of clay and animate it with a shard of his own soul so he would never lose control. This golem was given the name Shivetya, which means Deathless. Shivetya is supposed to guard the gateway to [Kina's] resting place forever.

It is possible that Fretinyahl is also recognized in the polytheistic Shadar cults as well, since they share many deities with the Gunni, but this was not specified.
