The Dank were the rulers of an independent sovereignty somewhere west of the Lady's Empire. They were the predatory neighbors of the city of Rue mentioned in two of the short stories in the On The Long Run arc. While both Rue and the Dank were independent powers, they had already heard "wildly exaggerated tales" of the Black Company's service to the Lady some years prior. These tales were most likely based upon the Company's first year of service, namely the events of The Black Company.

"Bone Eaters"[]

When the Company signed their contract to serve the Magistrates of Rue in "Bone Eaters" (that is, after the events of Shadows Linger), their primary mission was to "discourage the predatory behavior" of the Dank. Croaker judged the native soldiers of both Rue and the Dank harshly, stating both sides "were amateurs of abysmal quality led by fat old men who got their jobs because they were the sons of privilege". Because the Company was a professional outfit and contained veteran wizards (Silent, One-Eye, and Goblin), the Dank suffered badly in all of their skirmishes.

Croaker also hoped that the war against the Dank could be extended, so that he could enjoy the warm barracks within Rue throughout the winter.

Although the fate of the Dank is not explicitly stated, it is strongly implied that they were defeated. Croaker predicted that the Magistrates of Rue "would double-cross us as soon as they felt safe from the Dank". The Magistrates did indeed feel comfortable enough after a time to attempt to betray the Company... but were themselves slaughtered in turn.

"Chasing Midnight"[]

In "Chasing Midnight: The Dark Lord as a Teen", it is mentioned that Rue's "seventh century" was not participating in the campaign against the Dank. This suggests the Dank were fighting against 6 native centuries from Rue as well as the Black Company itself.
