The Dandha Presh is a long, inhospitable mountain range that splits the lower portion of the southern continent called the Shadowlands into northern and southern regions. Running east and curving northward, the range begins in the western ocean, with peaks rising increasingly high following the range's eastward growth across the lifeless Shindai Kus desert and deeper into the inhabited valleys of the Shadowlands. There is only one practical pass through the Dandha Presh east of the Shindai Kus: Charandaprash, which is found on the main longitudinal stretch of the range. North of Charandaprash is Lake Tanji (the site of the Battle of Lake Tanji), and in the valley south of it is found the city of Kiaulune and Longshadow's fortress called Overlook. Further south are the ruins of the Shadowgate and the massive, mysterious glittering plain.
The Dandha Presh stretches eastward for many miles, changing its local name frequently due to the many different peoples along the vast area. The range eventually curves northward. The areas west of this latitudinal arm are the limits of the Taglian territories; nothing is recorded in the Annals about what lies to the east of this arm.
As a key feature of the Shadowlands, the Dandha Presh played a major role in the Shadowmaster wars. For more than 4 years, the Black Company and their Taglian armies were limited to battles and skirmishes against the Shadowlanders north of the mountain range. Then, their milestone victory at the Battle of Charandaprash allowed them to finally prosecute the war against Longshadow south of the range. Additionally, Goblin led his Shaded Road commando expedition through the range during this time.
North side[]
In the far southwest of the mountains, harsh ocean winds scour the land until stopped by the Dandha Presh. These winds do not bring moisture, however, and the result is the large barren desert of Shindai Kus. The Naghir River, which flows northward, sources either from the Dandha Presh or the highlands north of the range.
South side[]
In the central valley area south of the mountains is the southernmost region of the Shadowlands. The fertile, though cold, land has been repeatedly ravaged. Conquered by the Shadowmaster Longshadow, the land and its inhabitants were brutally governed. Soon, the region was repeatedly devastated by additional troubles: first, by the titanic earthquake that occurred at the end of Bleak Seasons; next by the invasion of the Taglian army led by the Black Company during the final battles of the Shadowmaster wars; and finally the five year-long Kiaulune wars. During the following fifteen years under the Protectorate the Shadowlands were almost completely ignored. When the resurgent Black Company returned from the glittering plain in Soldiers Live, they had an uneventful crossing through the Dandha Presh.
