Chasing Moonlight was a teenage bandit and inexperienced low-magnitude wizard who appeared alongside his twin sister, Chasing Midnight, in the final pair of short stories in the On The Long Run story arc: "Bone Eaters" and "Chasing Midnight: The Dark Lord as a Teen".

Chasing Moonlight's clan – located someplace west of Rue in the northern continent – was wrecked by a series of misfortunes: "bad weather, pests, poor crops, [and] relentless tax collectors". This forced Moonlight, his twin sister Chasing Midnight (older by 12 minutes), her older brother (the leader of the gang, unnamed in the Annals), and 4 male cousins (later identified as Chick, Fade, Haru, Yuko) to become amateur bandits. His abusive older brother "wakened [Midnight's] keep-off-me talent", a minor sorcery that causes impotence in potential rapists.

He, Chasing Midnight, and the 4 cousins are captured by the Black Company when they attempt to rob the Company's cleverly-disguised scout group. The leader of the gang (his older brother) is chased away by a disgusting magic illusion cast upon him by Goblin. The six remaining relatives are invited by Darling to join her budding New White Rose Rebellion.

As the Black Company and their sizable train of refugees from the Lady's Empire moves slowly eastward, Moonlight and the four cousins were stuck digging ditches for human waste management. Eventually they disappeared without any notice beforehand, leaving Chasing Midnight with the Company. In stark contrast, in just a few weeks, Midnight became an impressive, hard-working trainee surgeon, diligently learning from Croaker, the Company's physician.

Later, Moonlight and the cousins secretly returned and ambushed – Rusty, a young, widely-hated Company man who had attempted to rape Midnight – at the latrines. Croaker interrupted the murder attempt, and the 5 teenagers were given amnesty by Darling who "overlooked their desertion completely" in return for extra duty. Moonlight received the least desirable shifts as ringleader.

When the Black Company and the refugee band following them are forced to approach the Village of Hungry Ghosts, one of Chasing Moonlight's cousins Yuko is among the four people killed gruesomely by evil entities. Later, in the city of Rue, the entire clan including even Midnight unexpectedly deserts the Black Company. When the Company departs Rue, Rusty's gruesomely mutilated corpse is spotted: he had been recently murdered by Midnight, Moonlight, and the cousins.

"Chasing Midnight" details the activities of Midnight and her cousins in Rue after her departure from the protection of Darling and the Black Company, but before the Company leaves Rue.

Chasing Moonlight attempts to con a local gang leader called Songo Songaghi as a honey trap. He steals a mysterious talisman called "the Shine" and flees Songo's house before it is collapsed by a dangerous wizard called Black Shroud. Soon afterward, he is captured by Black Shroud and subjected to vile sorcery that permanently erases his personality and apparently his memories. In this sorry state he is observed by Haru (a cousin who has returned to the Black Company in Rue) but Moonlight does not seem to properly recognize his own family.

Chasing Midnight, Chick, and Fade, spend the next few days desperately seeking to reunite with Moonlight. She eventually rescues Moonlight from the hideous wizard's abandoned fabric mill. But he is in a permanent infant-like mental state, and his health is badly deteriorating. While she supports her brother with affection and feeding, Midnight realizes that Moonlight had only associated himself with Songo Songaghi for the purpose of supporting her continued independence. Their morale plummets as Moonlight's body begins to reek increasingly of death; he is apparently rotting while he is still alive. When Black Shroud is shot down by Fade's crossbow outside the Silent Owl, the wizard's demise seems to be the cause of Moonlight literally falling to pieces. Later, Haru shares the speculation of the Black Company's wizards that Black Shroud and Songo Songaghi had been business partners, and were attempting to use the Shine and young victims like Moonlight to discover immortality.
