Asa was a homeless man in the squalid Buskin neighborhood of the city of Juniper. He was dragged into many of the events of Shadows Linger.

Shadows Linger[]

Like many people of the Buskin, Asa scrounged for firewood during the arctic winters of Juniper. He often kept the fire burning in the downtrodden Iron Lily tavern, and in return the barkeeper Marron Shed would let him stay inside from the cold. Asa secretly collected pine from the Enclosure to use as firewood. He also looted some old coins from the "passage urns" among the skeletons in the Catacombs... an unspeakable sacrilege in Juniper. Among the coins were recognizable ones from the Cajian period of the city's long history.

At one point, Asa took money from Krage, a local gangster who had designs to take the Lily from Shed and transform it into a brothel. Despite this, Shed would realize that Asa still qualified as one of his only friends.

Asa was forced by Shed and Raven to take them into the Catacombs. There, they coerced Asa to assist them in looting mummies to be sold to the bizarre denizens of the black castle. In the subterranean chamber, he was mauled by a Guardian. Raven killed the Guardian and suggested that they finish off Asa, but Shed refused. Instead, Shed and Raven took turns nursing him back to health upstairs in the Lily. Shed protected Asa from Krage’s thugs who sought him, and also from Inquisitor Bullock (with Croaker from the Black Company) who was investigating Raven's crimes.

Asa was safely in Meadenvil during the Battle of Juniper, and he was one of the few natives of Juniper to be spared the subsequent devastation of his home city. He was later arrested by the Limper, and had been bound to a horse when Croaker's men – Shed, Bullock, Silent, Kingpin, Otto, Hagop, and a local innkeeper – sprung their ambush on the Limper in the Meadenvil countryside. Asa was unharmed during the ambush but was threatened by the innkeeper's hounds, so he hid from them in a ditch near a patch of blackberries. Shed, mortally wounded nearby, with his last words asked Croaker to spare Asa. Croaker kept his promise. Asa begged to accompany Croaker and followed the Company veterans south, into the city of Shaker, where he went his own way without a farewell.
