Black Company Wiki

Arjana Drupada was the Purohita, the highest priest of Taglios, during Water Sleeps. Identifiable by a shock of wild white hair like an untamed haystack, Drupada was a prominent member of the Privy Council of Soulcatcher's Protectorate regime. Purohita Drupada was one of several officials targeted for abduction by Sleepy and her Black Company, which was at this time a clandestine urban underground unknown even to Soulcatcher.

Although Arjana Drupada only appears by name in Water Sleeps, it is strongly likely that he was the unnamed priest of Rhavi-Lemna who was discussing sensitive military and political matters with the Radisha Drah while being spied upon by Murgen as an invisible observer in She Is the Darkness.

Water Sleeps[]

Arjana Drupada was a priest of the Gunni cult of Rhavi-Lemna, the goddess of brotherly love, but was universally judged to be a sinister person. As Purohita, Drupada was ostensibly the royal chaplain of Taglios, but in reality he was the "true voice of the priesthoods" in the Privy Council. Usually enjoying the support of the other priests on the Council, Drupada often squabbled with Inspector-General of the Records Chandra Gokhale, who was organizationally much more important than the Purohita.

Purohita Drupada would become one of several high officials of the Privy Council to be abducted on orders of Sleepy, the leader of the underground Black Company. He was captured during a frightening, bloody assault mounted by Kendo Cutter on the steps of the Kernmi What during the priestly preparations for the upcoming Druga Pavi holiday. Other abductions included the Radisha Drah, Willow Swan, and Chandra Gokhale. Drupada was miserable during his captivity alongside his rival Gokhale, but the two refrained from harming one another due to the threat of harsh punishment from their captors if they came to blows. Drupada was left behind in his cage along with Gokhale when the Company escaped southward toward the Shadowgate. When Soulcatcher eventually found him, he was in no condition to resume his duties as Purohita.
