The al-Khul Company was a small unit of Taglian Vehdna soldiers loyal to Murgen and his Old Crew during the Siege of Dejagore, as recounted in Bleak Seasons.

Shadow Games[]

Though the al-Khul Company is not mentioned by name in Shadow Games, it was created as part of one of the 3 Taglian legions raised by Croaker the Liberator during those events. It originally numbered 600 men, apparently all Vehdna. They participated in the Battle of Dejagore where they were defeated alongside the other Taglian forces, suffered enormous casualties, and were subsequently trapped inside Dejagore.

Flashbacks to the Siege of Dejagore[]

The al-Khul Company suffered through the months of the subsequent infamous Siege of Dejagore, near the end of which there were only about 60 soldiers remaining out of the original 600. These Vehdna were admired by Murgen the Annalist as "the best Taglians attached to the Company... reliable and almost friendly". They were loyal to the Old Crew, and likewise shared Murgen's distrust of Mogaba, his Nar, and the Taglian First Legion which was mostly or completely Gunni.

Murgen first mentioned the al-Khul Company by name in his Annals in the context of an incident where, as reported by One-Eye, they chased off Sindhu with their swords drawn.

They later accompanied a group of Old Crew Company men (Murgen, One-Eye, Goblin, Otto, Hagop, Geek, Freak, Big Bucket, and Candles) and Uncle Doj to Dejagore's East Gate. There, they found some of the Nar attempting to destroy the gate and flood the city, accompanied by some Gunni First Legion men. Men from the al-Khul Company persuaded some of the Gunni men on the opposing side of the incipient danger, but the Nar cut down the Gunni who tried to flee. The subsequent melee seemed to be reserved to the men of the two factions of the Company, with many of the al-Khul and First Legion men not wanting to fight. Endibo, another Nar, and Geek – all Company men – were killed. When the gate began to crumble with the water pressure, everyone fled.

With the advantage of Goblin's sleep spell, the al-Khul Company helped Murgen capture the North and West Gates and their barbicans from Mogaba's men. They are not mentioned again by name in the Annals, but as Murgen stated that "the Taglians who had been with us from the beginning stuck with us", it is known they were among the many hundreds of people who escaped the city alongside the Company. By that time were ultimately answering to the Taglian general named Lanore Bonharj, even though he was Gunni. Among the other groups who followed them alongside the Company's Old Crew were the Nyueng Bao De Duang and other Taglians who deserted Mogaba.
